Serialized Vocabulary: A-Z Project

In my 2025 Typography IV class, I was assigned with the A-Z Project. Essentially, I was tasked with selecting a topic of my choice, and finding 26 terms relating to that theme from A to Z. Then, I was to design flash cards for these terms, front and back, as well as a box to contain all of them within.

At first I really wanted to make my topic Star Wars, but that wouldn’t have allowed me to have a lot of creative freedom regarding the visual language of my project, due to Star Wars already having a very iconic and recogniozable visual identity. So I chose a more scientific approach to space, and went with Cosmology! Cosmology is the study of the cosmos, or, the universe.

Above are my initial sketches for the card designs and logotype variations for the box. For the logotype sketches, I hand inked all of them, then scanned them into ProCreate on my iPad. The one on the bottom left was created using aluminum foil letters!

Here you can see I recreated some of my sketches in Illustrator to further narrow-down my final design.

Another exploration for my logotype was one that is reminiscent of chalkboard drawings, it gives that scientific, organic look I was looking for, so I decided to go with it for my final box logotype.

For the design on the back of the cards I wanted to include the first image of a black hole that was taken back in 2019, it may be a bit blurry, but the science nerd inside me thinks it’s just the coolese thing, and I really wanted to integrate it into my project that’s about space.

The cards below are my final designs!
